All-purpose joint compound is great for taping and initial coats, offering good strength. Topping compound is lighter and easier to sand, perfect for your final, smooth finish.
Yes, a dedicated drywall primer-sealer is recommended. It helps seal the porous surface, prevents flashing, and ensures your paint absorbs uniformly for a consistent colour.
For small holes, use a spackling compound or patching plaster. Apply in thin layers, allowing each to dry, then sand smooth. Prime the area before painting for best results.
You'll typically need a putty or taping knife, a sanding block with fine grit paper, and the appropriate joint compound. For larger cracks, you might also need drywall tape.
